이제 지식은 그 자체로 좋은 것, 혹은 폭넓고 인간적인 인생관을 세우는 수단이라기보다는 단순히 전문적 기능으로 여겨지게 되었다. 이 같은 현상은 과학 기술과 군사적 필요에 의해 야기된 사회통합의 일부일 뿐이다. 정치와 경제간의 상호 의존성이 과거 그 어느 때보다 커짐에 따라 사람들로 하여금 내 이웃들이 유용하다고 여기도록 강요하는 사회적 압력이 더욱 커지고 있다. 영국의 경우 대단한 부자들을 위한 학교나 오랜 전통으로 인해 손대기 힘든 몇곳을 제외한 모든 교육 기관들은 자기 돈이라도 마음대로 쓰는 것이 허용되지 않으며, 기술을 가르치고 충성심을 주입시키는 방식으로 유용한 목적 기여함으로써 국가를 만족시켜야 한다. 이것은 강제 군역, 보이스카웃, 정당의 조직화, 언론에 의한 정치적 열정의 유포로 이어지는 일백상통한 움직임의 핵심적인 부분이다. 그러나 문화와 직접적 실용성이 결합될 수 있는 경우와는 별도로 다양한 종류의 간접 실용성이란 것도 있다. 간접 실용성에는 기술적 능률에 직접 이바지하지 않는 지식들이 포함된다. 나는 그러한 지식을 더 많이 장려할수록 현대 세계의 최악의 특징들 가운데 적어도 일부는 개선될 수 있을 것이며, 직업적인 능력만을 무자비하게 추구하는 현상도 줄어들 것이라고 생각한다.

물론 일부러 여론을 조롱하는 행동을 할 필요는 없다. 여론을 조롱한다는 것은 전도된 방식이기는 하지만 여전히 여론의 지배에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다는 증거다. 그러나 정말로 여론에 대해 무관심하다면 그것은 하나의 힘이자, 행복의 원천이 된다. 지나치게 인습에 굴복하지 않는 사람들로 이루어진 사회는 한결같이 일사불란하게 행동하는 사회보다 훨씬 더 재미 있는 사회다. 각자의 성격이 개성적으로 발전되는 사회에서는 다양한 유형의 개성이 유지된다. 새로 만나는 사람들은 이미 알고 있는 사람들의 복사판이 아니기 때문에, 사람들은 새로운 사람들을 만나는 것에서 기쁨을 느낄수 있다. 이것은 귀족제도의 장점 중 하나였다. 태생에 따라 신분이 결정되었던 귀족 제도는 괴팍스런 행동이 허용될 수 있다는 장점을 가지고 있었다. Up in the Air is a 2009 American comedy-drama film directed by Jason Reitman and co-written by Reitman and Sheldon Turner. It is a film adaptation of the 2001 novel of the same name, written by Walter Kirn. The story is about a corporate downsizer Ryan Bingham (George Clooney) and his travels. The film follows his isolated life and philosophies along with the people he meets along the way. Filming was primarily in St. Louis, Missouri, which substituted for a number of other cities shown in the film. Several scenes were also filmed in Detroit, Michigan, Omaha, Nebraska, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Miami, Florida.

Reitman has heavily promoted Up in the Air with personal appearances during film festivals and other showings, starting with the Telluride Film Festival on September 5, 2009. The Los Angeles premiere was at the Mann Village Theater on Monday, November 30, 2009. Paramount scheduled a limited North American release on December 4, 2009, broadening the release on December 11, 2009 with wide release on December 23, 2009.

The National Board of Review and the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association have named it the best picture of 2009. It received eight Broadcast Film Critics Associationnominations and garnered a win for Adapted Screenplay, six Golden Globe nominations, earning a win for Best Screenplay, and three Screen Actors Guild nominations. It received sixAcademy Award nominations, but did not win in any category. Up in the Air received recognition from numerous critics’ associations.
